DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Data Train UBRA (U Bremen Research Alliance)\n\nBack
ground\nData holds the answers to all manner of questions and analysis met
hods can extract those answers - linking the two is “data preparation”
. Anyone interested in working with data will likely need to know at least
some of the principles outlined.\nLearning contents\nIn the social scienc
es\, “qualitative data” refers to various kinds of data – such as in
 terview transcripts\, observation protocols\, field notes\, pictures\, aud
io or video recordings\, and material artefacts – that are less structur
ed than “quantitative data” and thus cannot – and often should not
 – be easily transformed into numerical relatives for statistical analysi
 s. By contrast\, qualitative data are often heterogeneous\, complex\, very
information-rich\, highly context-dependent and sensitive – thus posing
particular ethical\, legal and practical challenges for research data man
agement (RDM)\, including data protection and informed consent\, anonymiza
tion\, documentation\, and sharing beyond the research project of origin.
This hands-on workshop aims to make participants familiar with major chall
enges of preparing qualitative social science data for (qualitative or qua
ntitative) analysis and to introduce them to good practices and RDM tools
to deal with those challenges. Particular attention is given to appropriat
e research documentation using a ‘study report’ and various context ma
terials\, and to the anonymization/pseudonymization of qualitative text da
ta\, including an introduction to the tool ‘QualiAnon’.\nThe following
topics will be primarily addressed:\n\nWhat are qualitative data? Example
s and characteristics\nWhy\, for Whom and How are qualitative data importa
nt?\nProducing and preparing qualitative data for research/analysis\nFocus
 : finding\, re-using and sharing qualitative data\nFocus: documenting qual
itative data and contexts\nFocus: anonymizing qualitative (text) data\n\nL
earning objectives\nPractical insights and experiences with management of
 qualitative research data.\nPrior knowledge\nnone\nTechnical requirements\
n\nOwn laptop\n\nConnection to Wifi via eduroam or equivalent access (see:
