Background
In any research project, data collection forms the foundation for deriving results and knowledge. This critical phase often lacks the detailed planning and documentation it deserves. By implementing a digital workflow for your research data collection process, you can effectively organize your work, carefully consider the information you need to collect, and mitigate the risk of (meta)data loss.
Learning contents
This course will focus on data collection as part of the research data lifecycle. We will discuss what is important for the design of meaningful and scientifically valid surveys and mapping campaigns, which data types are best suited for capturing different quantitative and qualitative data, what is informed consent and how to properly inform survey participants, how to structure questions (and options for answers) especially when we deal with sensitive data.
Learning objectives
We will learn to implement these aspects with two tools for digital data collection: KoboToolbox, a tool for surveys for teams and the public, and Qfield, a tool for geospatial data collection for individuals and teams. Further, we will apply XLS forms in both these tools, a standard format that will support the documentation and reproducibility of your data collection forms. The first day will focus on the theory, creating forms in KoboToolbox, and XLS forms: this day is for the whole group. On the second day, the time is entirely dedicated to Qfield and is optional for those interested specifically in mapping campaigns..
Prior knowledge
- Day One: Theory, KoboToolbox, XLS forms - no previous knowledge required
- Day Two: Qfield - basic knowledge of a GIS (e.g. QGIS) is an advantage (but anyone who is interested can participate)

Alexandra NozikAlexandra Nozik works as a geodata specialist at ZMT. As part of the Research Data Service workgroup, she supports scientists in designing data collection surveys and applying digital tools, while keeping in mind the rules of Good Scientific Practice and responsible data management. She is an Ambassador for Qfield, and has been applying both KoboToolbox and Qfield in research context for many years, sharing her excitement for open-source tools in academia. |
Dr. Philipp GiesDr. Philipp Gies works as a data manager for the social sciences at ZMT, supporting researchers in the collection, management, and archiving of sensitive qualitative data. He brings hands-on experience with data management plans, anonymisation, informed consent, and the collection of interview data. |
